Default Baby are receptive to high sound?

my baby is just 50 days old, My wife always stops me from keeping sound when im watching television, I just want to know whether babies are receptive to sound, because we had a naming function where lot of people came to my home, even inspite of all the sounds the baby is sleeping calm, this doubt arise after that, i want to know whether baby can realize sounds of higher volume which can disturb them.

Newborn babies are notorious for being able to sleep through loud sounds. When they are in the womb the sounds they hear (mother's heart beating, the wooshing of blood, etc.) is very loud, so they are used to loud sounds and are actually soothed by them. Sometimes babies who cry cry cry can be soothed and put to sleep by running the vacuum cleaner! So yes, the babies do realize the sound, but no, the sound doesn't bother them. Of course, if it's really quite and there is a sudden really loud noise, then that could be disturbing to them

yes it's true... sound of vacuum cleaner, hair drier, and shooshing can calm the baby!
i always shoosing him loudly near his ear, and suddenly he will be calm down.
this what i read and watch from "The Happiest Baby in the World" (Dr. Karl).
